November Newsletter-Thanksgiving and Everday

Thanksgiving and Everyday

So many people love to help with food for Thanksgiving which is incredible! Some of my favorite memories at JOC have been around Thanksgiving. We have cooked and handed out hundreds of meals over the last couple of years. Last year we had our first community meal for Thanksgiving which was so fun to get to sit around the table together with our friends and give thanks!

It is a really special time to eat together and remember the many things we have to be thankful for. Hunger is and EVERYDAY problem! As we have been serving more community meals this year, we have heard over and over how many people depend on the food they can get at community meals and in the JOC store. This November we are holding a food campaign called “Thanksgiving and Everyday”. We believe that no one should go hungry. We are committed to help provide nutritious food to our city!

More than two-thirds of the Family Room members reported that they do not have access to nutritious food and many of the other third that said that they have access to nutritious food say so because of JOC.

Let me tell you how you can get involved in “Thanksgiving and Everyday”

  • Help provide food for Thanksgiving. You can order a smoked Turkey from ASATT BBQ for your family and one will be donated to JOC. You can order here. There are also lots of sides that we need your help to make to deliver to our friends and for the Thanksgiving Meal at JOC. Click on the button “Take me to the “Thanksgiving and Everyday” page.

  • Stock the Family Room with nonperishable goods! (The best items are nutritious meals that can be made in a microwave such as Completes, stew, chili, packaged rice, noodles, etc.)

  • Provide a community Meal (get together a group of 5-15 people, make/buy a meal, and come serve it for Lunch on Monday or Dinner on the first Thursday of the month)

  • Make burritos for Tuesday night outreach. (We take 150+ meals to the motels on Colfax between Yosemite and 225 every Tuesday night. You can sign up to make burritos and bring them to JOC on Tuesday night by 6pm)

  • Help us connect with Restaurants that will donate food for community meals or snacks for the Family room on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays.

  • Help us raise money for a commercial fridge for the new Family Room at 9360 E. Colfax.

Ways to get involved:

Opportunities that do not require training:

Our Tuesday night outreach is growing. We are serving more people and need more food. If you would like help, you can sign up to make burritos and bring them to 9360 E. Colfax (or send them with another volunteer) on Tuesday night by 6pm. The burritos can be breakfast/egg burritos or regular bean/beef and rice burritos. Please NO pork. You can sign up here. (please note you do not need training to make burritos, but you do need training to volunteer for Tuesday night outreach.)

We are opening up slots to cook or buy and serve a community meal on Mondays. (Bring your office!) Sign up here.

Host a drive to stock the Family Room or buy things from the Amazon wish list.

Opportunities that do require training:

Join us for Tuesday night outreach. Sign up here.

Prayer Requests:

  • Our volunteer team has started gathering, learning, and praying as we start our outreach and drop-in hours for women with the intent of reaching women who have been trafficked and sexually exploited. Pray for our team and for the women.

  • Pray for our building to sell

  • Pray for our friends as the weather gets cold. The winter is hard for a lot of our friends.
