October Newsletter

Happy October!

It is hard to believe that fall is here. The heat is often hard for our friends, but the cold weather brings different challenges. We are starting to gather coats, gloves, hats, and hand warmers. We are putting the grill away and getting out the crockpots for soup and other hot meals. We are thrilled to have a larger space where people can come in and warm up this year.

Do you remember the story of Jesus sleeping in the boat in the middle of the storm? A storm arose in the sea that was so large that the waves were crashing over the sides of the boat. The disciples were full of fear and Jesus slept. They woke Jesus up sure that they were all about to die.

That story reminds me of the humanity of Jesus’ need for a nap and of His deity in absolute trust in God the Father. He felt safe in the care of God so He slept. One of our main goals is to create felt safety. We do that in many ways such as providing choice, prioritizing being a non-anxious presence, and creating a welcoming environment. I love it when I see one of our friends curled up on the couch or crouched over on the table fast asleep.

Psalm 127:1-2 Unless the Lord builds a house,

    the work of the builders is wasted.

Unless the Lord protects a city,

    guarding it with sentries will do no good.

It is useless for you to work so hard

    from early morning until late at night,

anxiously working for food to eat;

    for God gives rest to his loved ones.

This story is a good reminder for me as well. When I feel the anxiety of the rising storm, I can remember that I dwell in safety with God.

Thank you so much for making the fundraising dessert this year a success!

If you missed it, here is the video of the impact of the Family Room from our friends.
